Kariega Forges New Economic Path Beyond Automotive Sector

Kariega, a significant industrial centre in South Africa's Eastern Cape, is implementing ambitious plans for economic diversification. The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (NMBM) and local leadership are actively promoting economic growth and job creation by supporting small businesses and exploring new sectors such as food processing, chemicals, textiles, and green technologies. This strategic shift aims to build a stronger, more stable future, address unemployment, and ensure broad community benefits, fostering resilience in the local economy.

Kariega: Shifting Gears for a Brighter Tomorrow

For an extended period, Kariega, located approximately 35 kilometres north of Gqeberha, has served as a manufacturing hub. The Volkswagen (VW) plant has been producing vehicles for many years, and Goodyear's tyre manufacturing has also been a key industry. The automotive sector remains crucial, with vehicles exported globally. For instance, the Volkswagen Group South Africa plant in Uitenhage produced a record 161,954 vehicles in 2019, with over 108,000 destined for international markets.

However, despite this success, local leaders recognise the necessity for broader economic engagement. Expanding beyond the automotive industry is vital to secure a prosperous future for the town's population of approximately 300,000 residents. The familiar industrial scents of oil and metal signify hard work, but a more diversified approach is now being pursued.

Why Kariega Needs More Than Just Cars

Manufacturing in South Africa presents challenges, including access to funding, the need for skilled labour, and international competition. These challenges also present opportunities for innovation, the adoption of cleaner energy, and technological advancements. Localised manufacturing in Kariega can create more jobs, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance skill development within the community. The NMBM is developing strategies to support business growth, provide assistance, and improve infrastructure and essential services, all contributing to a stronger local economy.

Empowering Local Businesses: Kariega's Entrepreneurial Spirit

A key aspect of Kariega's economic transformation involves empowering local residents to establish and expand businesses, particularly within its townships. In 2019, a Township Economic Development plan for Uitenhage (now Kariega) identified twelve projects for small businesses in areas like KwaNobuhle and Rosedale/Langa. These projects encompassed sectors such as automotive services, recycling, hair salons, and creative arts. The plan projected an investment of between R74.5 million and R112 million and the creation of hundreds, potentially thousands, of jobs. The Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation (SLF), supported by the Volkswagen Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Initiatives Trust, played a significant role in developing this plan for the townships.

Subsequently, the Kariega Township Development Project (KTD), also backed by the Volkswagen Trust, operated from 2021 to 2022, assisting informal small businesses. The project provided training to 45 entrepreneurs in areas including automotive repair, hairdressing, and waste recycling. An independent evaluation confirmed that these businesses experienced increased revenue, improved operational efficiency, enhanced marketing strategies, and expanded networks.

Nonkqubela Maliza, representing Volkswagen Group South Africa, emphasised the critical role of small and medium businesses in job creation and economic growth. This is particularly relevant given ongoing challenges such as the Nelson Mandela Bay water crisis updates, which underscore the importance of local resilience and diverse employment opportunities.

New Horizons: Agro-processing, Green Technology, and More!

Kariega's diversification efforts extend beyond small businesses into new growth areas. The region possesses suitable agricultural land, making agro-processing – the transformation of agricultural products into items like juice or canned food – a promising sector for job creation. Furthermore, there is an increasing focus on green technologies, including renewable energy sources such as solar power. The vision includes factories powered by clean energy, aligning industrial activity with environmental sustainability.

The Eastern Cape is a major contributor to South Africa's automotive industry, producing half of all vehicles in the country. Future developments, such as the planned Stellantis facility in Coega, are expected to generate additional jobs and opportunities for the broader Nelson Mandela Bay area. This represents a significant boost for the province's manufacturing capabilities.

Kariega is embracing these new directions. The community is known for its strong work ethic and solidarity. By supporting these new initiatives and local entrepreneurs, the town is not only building businesses but also cultivating a stronger, more prosperous Kariega for future generations.
